Our patients enjoy the benefits of teeth cleaning. It freshens your breath, treats and prevents gingivitis, removes stains, and makes your teeth feel smoother.
Our teeth cleanings are performed by our hygienists. They use small instruments and an ultrasonic cleaning instrument to remove plaque and tartar (mineralized plaque) from the teeth. They will remove stains from the teeth and polish them with a prophy paste. A thorough flossing and a rinse will remove the remaining debris. We may recommend a fluoride treatment for those patients who are caries prone.
Scaling and root planing is a treatment we would recommend for patients with periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is characterized by deep periodontal pockets, bleeding and swollen gums, loss of supporting bone, loose teeth, tender gums, bad breath, painful chewing, and receding gums.
Usually a local anesthetic is used and the hygienist will remove plaque and calculus from the deep periodontal pockets. The teeth roots are smoothened to remove the bacterial toxins. When the roots are clean and hygiene is improved then the tissues will reattach and the pockets will shrink.
After a few weeks, the hygienists will measure the gum pockets to evaluate if treatment was successful or if further treatment is needed.
